Team

Mitewekan is made up of people from across Canada including Indigenous Elders, Indigenous Youth, Knowledge Holders, Indigenous people with lived/living experiences of various heart issues, researchers and leaders in Indigenous health, as well as non-Indigenous allies. Members of Mitewekan join us from nations spanning Turtle Island from East to West and North to South. We are continuously looking to expand our network of members so that we may advocate for and amplify Indigenous voices in heart health research.

Pewaseskwan

Mitewekan is housed at the University of Saskatchewan in the College of Medicine under the umbrella of Pewaseskwan (Cree for “the sky is starting to clear”). Pewaseskwan (the Indigenous Wellness Research Group) focuses on research on Indigenous health and wellness. Research may involve Western medicine, but it brings traditional Indigenous knowledge and medicines to the forefront, as these are as important to promoting good health among Indigenous people in Canada. Pewaseskwan is led by Dr. Alexandra King and Prof. Malcolm King. They have teams based at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, BC and the University of Saskatchewan (USask) in Saskatoon, SK.
